What mountain biking can teach you about sales and business

I just got back from an epic mountain bike trip around Mont Blanc.

In 5 days, we rode with five guys on mountain bikes from Chamonix in France via Italy and Switzerland and back again.

During that time, we climbed thousands of meters riding trails from one mountaintop to another.

We overcame our fears when passing scary ridges and going down slippery paths.

We stretched our limits, pushing our bikes for hours to get to the top because the path was too rocky and steep for cycling.

The goal was plain and straightforward;

just get to the top and back down and end up in Chamonix again after five days.

So it was just a matter of staying focused on that goal, and we knew we would eventually get there.

It wasn’t a race but a battle against ourselves and gravity.

And it was one of the most exciting and fun things I have ever done.

Once you reach the top, you are treated to some of our planet’s most magnificent views.

While doing all of this, it occurred to me that there are many analogies between being a sales professional, running a business and riding up big mountains.

As a sales professional or running your own business, you have to be a bit crazy too, just like voluntarily riding a mountain on a bike is a bit nuts, but fun at the same time.

It simply isn’t for everyone …

To deal with all the ass-kicking.

The adversity

The negativity

Getting your act together after yet another setback

Seeing the top (or sometimes not), and keep moving

You need to be a special breed to do such a thing intentionally, and just like mountain biking, it takes a lot of mental strength and resilience to stay in motion.

It is seeing the bigger picture that helps you actually to enjoy it.

Because you know why you are doing what you are doing, you are the master of your mind and the creator of your life.

The mountains don’t allow for arrogance, just as hubris doesn’t help your business or serve your clients.

The goal is clear

to reach the top,

but you sometimes experience much difficulty along the way

Once you reach it,

you can enjoy the magnificent view, all the pain and setbacks are quickly forgotten.

And know you’ll have an epic descent.

Just like riding a trail in mountain biking, success in sales and business is, to a large extent, a mind game.

Yes, you need the proper skill set,

like it helps if you are in good shape,

that’s obvious.

But to enjoy the struggle to the top,

winning the battle against all the negative voices in your head is essential to propel yourself with a mindset of possibility and positivity.

To conquer the trail forward one meter at a time.

Because you know this will lead you to enjoy the magnificent views and the epic ride downhill afterwards.

To then start all over again.

And isn’t life and business all about epic rides and exciting experiences?

So, if you are an experienced sales professional or business owner and you want to learn more about how to silence the negative voices in your head and tap into your next level of sales power, I have an 8-week trajectory where you learn to do just that…

and a lot more.

  • If you’ve had enough of feeling drained after another day dealing with challenging prospects and clients

  • If you are fed up with all the negativity, you take home to your family on those days.

  • If you want to learn how to deal with the feeling of guilt after another deal seemed to have slipped through your fingers

  • And the ever-nagging fear of whether you can stay in business in the long run.

This 8-week program might forever change how you approach your profession and life.

  • You will learn precisely what is causing the negative feelings that affect your performance and how to deal with them.

  • You will learn how to recover quicker from the inevitable rejections and setbacks you experience as a sales professional and business owner.

  • Your (prospective) clients and partners will feel the magic of your empowering personality and genuinely appreciate working with you.

  • And you will learn to use your mind’s positive, laser-focused power to leverage your experience and wisdom and create true magic for your business and your clients.

Like mountain biking, you’ll learn to enjoy the hard ride up and experience the incredible feeling of reaching the summit.

Because you know you are ready for it.

As a bonus, you’ll notice that your relationships with the people around you will dramatically improve (your family will thank you for that)

Why would you work with me?

I have successfully run a menswear fashion agency for over 15 years, making more than 50 million € in sales in a highly competitive environment.

During those years, I have experienced first-hand what a positive mindset can do and what it takes to build strong relationships with clients and suppliers.

At one point, my wife and I decided it was time for a new chapter in our lives, and we moved from Belgium to Spain with our three kids and our dog.

I have always been passionate about empowering people and helping them see the possibilities in life and business, so after selling the company, I decided to get a professional coaching degree at ICA, become a Positive Intelligence Coach and get an accreditation from the International Coaching Federation.

I now help sales professionals and business owners create a life of freedom on their own terms by inspiring and empowering them to become the best version of themselves, so they can use their talents to make the world a better place.

You only have one ride in this life; you’ll better make it one to remember!

Cheers,

Bart
