Is this freedom?
Here is a little story from the book ‘The Psychology of Money’ by Morgan Housel, which I read the other day:
Derek Sivers, a successful entrepreneur, once wrote about a friend who asked him to tell the story about how he got rich:
I had a day job in midtown Manhattan paying $20K per year - about minimum wage … I never ate out, never took a taxi.
My cost of living was about $1000/month, and I was earning about $1800/month.
I did this for two years, and saved up $12.000. I was 22 years old.
Once I had $12.000 I could quit my job and become a full time musician.
I knew I could get a few gigs per month to pay my cost of living. So I was free. I quit my job a month later, and never had a job again.
When I finished telling my friend this story, he asked for more. I said no, that was it.
He said, “No, what about when you sold your company?”
I said no, that didn’t make a big difference in my life.
That was just more money in the bank.
The difference happened when I was 22.
🤔 This made me think. How much of what you do today still contributes to your freedom to do the things you love, the things you’re exceptionally good at?
I’m sure there’s a fairly high chance it is far less than what you dreamed of when you first started building your business.
🙁 And that’s a pity. Because it makes you feel unfulfilled at best, unhappy, and maybe even stressed out at worst.
🌡️ Your health suffers
👫 Your relationships suffer
📉 Your performance suffers
⚡ Your energy is not as high as it could be
All because, along the way, you have drifted away from who you truly are, whilst the responsibilities piled up.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
Life is short.
Losing your spark is a disservice to the people you hold dear.
It deprives the world of your true impact.
And it is a sure recipe for remorse later in life.
You do not have to accept living like that.
Sometimes, we simply do not see the alternative paths we could take.
Even if they are right in front of us.
That’s normal; it’s being human.
✨ I believe everyone should have a well-balanced, happy life. I also believe this is more within your reach than you can imagine.
🧠 But seeing that by yourself can be so hard, if not impossible, because our minds limit our ability to see the full picture.
So if you recognize yourself in any of the above, and you want to reclaim your freedom and find your spark again,
send me a message,
and we’ll have a conversation about it.
It might change everything for you.
